A profound symbol in the spiritual traditions of the Himalayas and East Asia, it represents the Buddha's enlightened mind and the path to liberation.
Symbolism
The structure of a stupa symbolizes the purified "Five Elements" and the stages of the spiritual path.
Square base (Earth): The 60cm wide base represents the element of "Earth" and symbolizes the "Ten Virtuous Deeds," which form the foundation of spiritual practice.
Hemispherical dome (Water): The round section above the base represents the element of "Water" and the state of a tranquil mind (meditative equipoise).
Spire (Fire): The conical spire (often consisting of 13 rings) represents the element of "Fire" and symbolizes the 13 stages leading to enlightenment.
Sun and Moon (Wind/Space): Located at the very top, these symbols represent the union of wisdom and compassion, indicating the path toward the highest state of consciousness (void/space).
The design includes specific traditional motifs:
• Snow Lion: Carved into the base, it symbolizes a fearless mind, cheerfulness, and the power of an enlightened mind.
• Vajra (Dorje): The crossed vajra symbol on the middle section represents the "diamond-like" indestructible and unchanging nature of reality.
• Central Niche: Housed within the dome (bumpa) are statues of deities such as Akshobhya, which symbolize specific aspects of the wisdom of enlightenment.
