Statue of Monju Bosatsu

This is a stunningly exquisite, handcrafted statue of Manjushri, the Buddhist Bodhisattva who symbolizes transcendent wisdom, insight, and awakening. Created in the traditional Himalayan style, he is seated in the full lotus position (padmasana) upon a beautifully decorated double lotus throne. The surface of the statue is finished in dazzling 24-karat gold, and the robes draping over his legs are carved with delicate, intricate floral and leaf patterns. His face features gently downcast eyes and a serene smile, highlighted by the urna on his forehead, which signifies spiritual vision, and he wears an elaborate five-leaf crown studded with jewels upon his head.

• Flaming Sword (Khadga): The double-edged sword raised high in the right hand is the most defining characteristic of Manjushri Bodhisattva. It represents the power of sharp wisdom that cuts through the root causes of ignorance, delusion, and suffering. The flames indicate that this wisdom is transformative and illuminates the world.

• Lotus and Sutra: The left hand is held at chest level in the vitarka mudra (gesture of discussion/teaching), gently grasping the stem of a lotus flower. The flower blooms beside the left shoulder, supporting a scripture upon it. This book is the Prajnaparamita Sutra (the Perfection of Wisdom sutra), symbolizing the ultimate realization of truth.

• Lotus Throne: The double lotus throne upon which the figure sits represents purity and divine birth. Just as a lotus grows from muddy water yet remains unstained, the teaching shows that enlightenment, though arising from a world mired in suffering, remains untainted by its impurities.

• Bodhisattva Ornaments: The heavy earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and intricate crown signify the high status of a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva is a being who, while having attained enlightenment themselves, chooses to remain in this world to help all sentient beings reach the same state.
